Evidence-Based Strategies for Dealing with Trauma: 5 Approaches Backed by Science

When dealing with trauma, there are evidence-based strategies that can be helpful. Here, I will discuss five suggested approaches, along with scientific studies;

Seek support from your social circle: Connecting with friends, family, or support groups can play a role in processing emotions and finding solace. Research has consistently shown that social support impacts mental health and recovery from trauma (Ozbay et al., 2007).

Incorporate mindfulness and relaxation techniques into your routine: Mindfulness-based interventions have been proven to alleviate trauma-related distress and improve well-being (Lindahl et al., 2017). Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques like breathing or progressive muscle relaxation can induce a sense of calmness. Help reduce anxiety (Hoge et al., 2013).

Engage in exercise: Consistent physical activity has been scientifically linked to positive effects on mental health, including the reduction of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms (Stathopoulou et al., 2006; Cooney et al., 2013). Exercise also promotes the release of endorphins, chemicals that enhance mood.

Consider using behavioral techniques: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage the symptoms associated with trauma. By challenging thoughts and promoting coping strategies, CBT aims to reframe experiences and mitigate the impact of trauma (Resick et al., 2002; Bradley et al., 2005).

Seek assistance: If you’re struggling with trauma, seek help from a qualified mental health professional. Research supports the effectiveness of evidence-based therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and prolonged exposure therapy in treating trauma-related disorders (Bisson et al. 2007).
